Does Crime Stoppers Work!

YES! The NWT and NU Crime Stoppers program has been in operation since 1989 and has been successful in offering information for the police to actively respond on criminal investigations and to proactively assist in crime prevention throughout communities in the north.

Many tips have resulted in arrests and the recovery of property. Calls have included information about murder, robbery, rape, assaults, drug and firearm offenses.

Other benefits of Crime Stoppers include:

  • a greater awareness in the community that there is a crime problem.
  • a willingness by the community to fight back against crime if it is given the opportunity and motivation.
  • improved relationships between police, media, and the community.

Structure and Funding of Crime Stoppers

Crime Stoppers is NOT a police program. It is run by a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of a group of concerned citizens. The Board administers the operation and promotion of the program across the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

The Crime Stoppers program is funded by private donations and fundraising. NWT/NU Crime Stoppers is grateful for the generous support of its corporate sponsor, Rio Tinto Diavik Diamond Mines for their contributions towards the promotion of its program across the north.
